Children’s Bereavement and Counselling Services My son was having a lot of difficulty coping with me being sick especially as he was so young. I found getting counseling for a toddler was incredibly difficult. In the end, the children’s counseling service at Mt Olivett hospital at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane was able to offer free counseling for Tiernan, even though there website states it is only for over 5 year olds. They can help children through the issues around their mum being sick and also prepare them for her dying if that is required—Child and Young People’s Bereavement Centre
Medicare will fund up to 12 psychology services per year. To do this you need to go to your GP and mention that you would like medicare assisted counseling and then they can write the referral for you.
GP’s that do Counselling Some GP’s do counseling and the huge benefits of this are that firstly they will be aware of the interaction of all the chemo drugs you are having and secondly as it is a doctor visit it will be covered by medicare. To find a counselor go to the Beyond Blue website. Don’t be afraid to seek help
Other Medicare Funded Services Your GP can do a special referral (see the attached) for medicare funded services such as Chiropractor, Dietician, Osteopath, Occupational Therapist or Phsyiotherapist if you need any of these services
